Evan is a true example of determination. He was born with a severe bi-lateral foot deformity. At three-days-old, Evan was in a full leg cast and remained in intense treatment until grade 2. Even with daily physio and weekly interventions, he never gave up on sports and quickly became a leader on the ice, on the baseball diamond, on the track and now on the court.
Evan started playing basketball in grade 7 and has won numerous MVP awards and All-Star Team recognition. At the age of 14, Evan was asked to play U19 Brockville Elite team. Throughout the season he faced challenges, which eventually led to him being a starter. From there, he has learned from older players to embrace his role as a leader. During this time, he led his school team to multiple championships as team captain.
Evan is currently captain of his team, Grassroots Elite, which is one of the best AAU programs in Canada, playing out of Toronto.
In 2020, Evan was looking forward to playing at NAIG before it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Evan really loves helping younger kids learn the fundamentals of basketball. Last year, before COVID hit, he had organized a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with his school that collected donations and toys for a charity. Evan gives back to his community by helping out with peers or younger kids’ practices in the Brockville Blazers organization.
Kids look up to him and he enjoys showing youth the importance of education by tutoring and by also setting an example academically as well.
Evan has many sport heroes; his bedroom wall is plastered with posters from past, current and upcoming basketball stars. If it had to be paired down to one, it would have to Kobe Bryant.
“Evan is a true leader. With his determination and leadership, Evan has brought his team to two basketball championships. He is a strong worker that never gives up, also, a good role model for the younger kids. Evan will be an asset to any organization. I can confidently recommend him for any position or undertaking that he chooses to pursue. I strongly recommend him for ‘Sport Heroes in the Making’ for ISWO.” – Coach
