about iswo

Founded in 2011, ISWO addresses the lack of Indigenous representation in Ontario sports and wellness. It offers culturally grounded programs for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, supporting over 430,000 Indigenous Peoples. Recognized by ASC and NAIG Council, ISWO manages Team Ontario for NAHC and NAIG. Sport fosters community, skills, and wellness. Join our programs, volunteer, or partner with us across the province.

Change, growth, and culture

At ISWO, we are dedicated to enhancing the lives of Indigenous Peoples through sport, culture, and wellness initiatives. Our programs are designed to foster community engagement and promote healthy lifestyles.

Our Vision

Active and healthy Indigenous peoples, families and communities in Ontario.

Our Mission

To enhance the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of Indigenous peoples in Ontario, through physical activity, recreation and sport activities.

Our Mandate

To develop and deliver sport and recreation opportunities for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth and communities in Ontario, living on and off reserve, in rural and urban settings, which positively impact lives and increase well being.

Ready for tomorrow

ISWO started as a youth sports initiative and has grown into a provincial leader in Indigenous health and wellness. While sport remains at the heart of our mission, our programs now include land-based learning, cultural teachings, and leadership development. The organization has achieved key milestones include hosting the 2017 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), launching the Standing Bear Youth Leadership program, and more recently, the Bridge Employment Training initiative.

With over 350,000 Indigenous Peoples served, ISWO has built a legacy of impact. From youth mentorship pipelines to digital wellness access, our programs adapt to diverse community needs while preserving cultural integrity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ISWO mobilized over $5 million in relief—including PPE, clothing, and food—for Indigenous communities, alongside developing a suite of virtual programs.

Evolution

New programs, milestones, and opportunities to build healthier communities.

Impact

Expanded our reach with over 150 events and programs initiated since 2020.
