CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO THE ISWO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

October 30, 2020 – Mississauga, Ontario – Indigenous Sport & Wellness Ontario (ISWO) announced Friday, an open call for nominations for it’s Board of Directors.

ISWO is the recognized Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Body for Ontario, serving all Indigenous Peoples and communities across the province of Ontario, including First Nations, Inuit and Metis, living on and off-reserve, in rural and urban settings. ISWO develops opportunities for participation in sport and cultural activities that promote wellness and positive lifestyles for Indigenous Peoples across Ontario.

ISWO is seeking individuals interested in serving on the Board of Directors. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting an online nomination on, or before November 20, 2020 at 6:00 pm (EST). A board-approved Nominations Committee will review all nominations and recommend a slate of the candidates to the ISWO Board of Directors as per the schedule outlined below. The ISWO Nomination Committee is in the process of nominating up to a maximum of four (4) board members to serve a three-year term. The Committee seeks inclusive pools of candidates to ensure diversity among member applications, including gender, First Nations, Inuit, Metis, geographical representation, and skill set, while sharing the values of ISWO. The Nominations Committee will recommend a final slate of candidates to the Board. All applicants will be notified of their status prior to the board’s meeting to finalize the selected candidates.

General Role of a Board of Directors

The Board consists of Officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary), and up to a maximum of eight (8) other members and the President. The Officers constitute the Executive Committee. The term of Board Members is three (3) years. The Board is the governing body of the Association. The Board deliberates and acts only by consensus during a properly called and noticed meeting with a quorum present.

Responsibilities of Directors

An ISWO board member is responsible to represent the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization. The role requires the Board Member to be accountable for the following duties:

  1. Meeting Participation – The Board Member is expected to participate in all meetings of the Board including conference calls and face-to-face meetings.
  2. Committee Participation – The Board Member is also expected to actively participate or Chair one or more ISWO Committees, as amended from time to time.
  3. Be Informed – The Board Member must be informed about the affairs of the Council to properly perform their duty to act in the best interest in the association. The expectation is the Board Member prepares for each Board conference call or meeting by reviewing all material provided with the meeting agenda. The Board Member is also expected to listen to, empathize with and share the needs of the membership.
  4. Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality – The Board Member shall not participate in any Council decision when the Board Member has a material financial, political or personally advancing interest in the transaction in question without first informing the Board of the interest and following proper procedures.
