Treaty 3 Trapping Course

February 13, 2023 - February 17, 2023

Join Standing Bear, Kaaren Dannenmann, and Waasegiizhig Nanaandawe’iyewigamig

in the Treaty 3 Trapping course.

The Treaty #3 trapping course emphasizes conservation, safety and humaneness, as required by the Agreement of International Humane Trapping Standards. For Tw3, this is carried out by teaching the Anishinaabe perspectives, the teachings based on respect, rights and responsibilities and reciprocity.

By the end of the training, novice trappers will be knowledgeable in traditional practices; proficient trapline responsibilities, trap preparation, maintenance and setting; trap sets; pelt handling and market trends; basic grading techniques; safety and survival in the bush and much more. Participants will learn how to use these skills in accordance with the sacred teachings of their Elders, respectfully, responsibly and using the ceremonial ways of the Land.

There are two exams, a practical exam and a written exam. Successful trainees will receive Treaty #3 trapping certification which is recognized and acknowledged by Ontario and the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. Participants will also receive a Standing Bear Traditional Knowledge credit.

This course will run February 13-17, 2023 | 9PM-4PM daily

Open to Indigenous Youth in treaty 3 territory aged 13-29. Registration is limited and will operate at a first come-first served basis.
