Sport Development Tour

This year, in order to reach more Indigenous youth at every level of play, ISWO is introducing the 2019 Sport Development Tour: On the Road to NAIG.

The Sport Development Tour is a pathway to NAIG and beyond, aimed at building capacity, developing skills and providing more opportunities for young Indigenous athletes. Using the Sport Development Tour approach, ISWO’s goal is to build a stronger Team Ontario for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) and other national level sporting competitions.

The 2019 Sport Development Tour features sport clinics and multi-sport camps to help develop sport-specific skills for athletes, as well as tryouts, competitions and tournaments for those already at the competitive level, and an athlete identification program, which identifies athletes at partner and community sport events, who have the potential to represent Team Ontario at the upcoming 2020 NAIG scheduled to take place from July 12-19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Frequently Asked Questions

JOIN THE ‘2019 SPORT DEVELOPMENT

Indigenous Sport & Wellness Ontario (ISWO) is seeking interested communities to JOIN the 2019/2020 SPORT DEVELOPMENT TOUR. We encourage any and all interested groups including Ontario’s First Nations, Urban Inuit Groups, Métis Chartered Communities, Indigenous Friendship Centres, and/or other Indigenous communities/organizations to consider applying to host an event or expand the scope of an existing event to include athlete identification and skill development.

Three Host Application categories (Multi-Sport Camps, Event Additions and Official Tryouts) will serve as athlete identification opportunities for First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth, of eligible age, to compete at the 2020 North American Indigenous Games taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 12-19.

Co-hosting events is critical to provide as many opportunities as possible for competition and development for Indigenous athletes across the province. Such events also function as a catalyst for bringing communities together, while improving the event hosting capacity between multiple partners, along with the potential to host a sport event annually.

Please note that as per ISWO’s mandate, camps, tryouts and sport development activities, will be distributed equally across the six ISWO regions, with an emphasis on inclusion of First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth.

ISWO MULTI-SPORT CAMPS

ISWO hosts a number of multi-sport camps across the province, on an annual basis. The goal of the camps are to increase physical activity, learn to train, advance personal resiliency and encourage Indigenous youth to remain active for life. The multi-sport camp experience offers sport fundamentals, with an opportunity to develop sport, leadership and social skills, in a culturally holistic environment. ISWO receives annual funding from the Government of Ontario to host between one to two camps, per region, across Ontario each year. Communities interested in collaborating with ISWO to host a multi-sport camp in their community are encouraged to submit an application.

EXPANDING AN EXISTING EVENT

If you’re hosting a sport event in your community, consider inviting ISWO to be part of it. Existing community events can join the Sport Development Tour to give more youth the opportunity to develop their skills and try out for Team Ontario. Through partnership with ISWO, your existing event could provide local athletes and those from surrounding communities, an opportunity to develop sport specific skill sets and build capacity, through a single sport experience. ISWO, in partnership with Provincial Sport Organizations, can support your event by supplying sport specific training and knowledge for young athletes on how to train and compete. The events will also work to inspire first-time athletes, while providing those already familiar with the sport an experience to enhance their knowledge and skill level. In addition to skill development, ISWO will utilize the events as an opportunity to identify athletes with the potential for Team Ontario and provide them with additional information about try-outs and the upcoming North American Indigenous Games. Information about other ISWO programs and events will also be provided.

To invite ISWO to support an existing community sport event, please fill out the Existing Event application.

OFFICIAL TEAM ONTARIO TRYOUTS

Athletes will continue to be evaluated by selected team coaches and technical invitational staff for the purposes of identifying athletes who will be invited to represent Team Ontario at the 2020 North American Indigenous Games. Team Ontario athletes will be qualified through a formal selection process to compete against the best athletes from across Turtle Island. ISWO does not own its own facilities for sporting events, so the success of formulating Team Ontario in 14 respective sports, with inclusion of youth from across the province, depends upon collaboration (between ISWO, communities and respective sport organizations) to obtain quality facilities to co-deliver try-outs from each sport category. Communities interested in hosting an official tryout for 2020 Team Ontario selection are encouraged to fill out an application.
